To all the dozens (well, maybe the 8 of you) that are interested in the final posts for the transmission rebuild, please be patient. I'm trying trying trying to get to it. My life is a bit more hectic then it was when I started this project. I'm trying to carve out some time to make these posts. I really want to! Between the 9-month-old, and now working 2 part-time jobs, plus the extra jobs I get on the side, there's just not a lot of minutes left. I'm sure each of you understand and can sympathize. But I promise I haven't forgotten.

Same hear. tryed to rebuild my trans a while back no book just swap parts out well not so easy. All gears are forward no revears. This time im using the book and your post to help me along the way. also from thornton co so ill be calling for help just hope you hear. thanks for the pics and post to help along the way.

Joel - thanks for the very detailed information. One short question. Where can I buy individual parts for my 47RH transmission on line? I have been buying parts from the local Dodge dealer but, of course, they don't have none stock parts.

I got most of my parts from PATC Perfromance Transmissions and Parts. I can't necessarily recommend them. The custom service pretty much sucked. They initially sent some wrong parts parts and it took 4 or 6 weeks to get the problem and confusion cleared up. But in the end, I did get what a wanted and what I paid for.
I also got a few parts from Transmission Parts USA. I never had any reason to contact customer service since everything I ordered from there arrived quickly and accurately.
I did get 2 parts from my local AAMCO business. They were 2 parts that I couldn't find anywhere else but that they could get from their local supplier. I contacted that supplier but they weren't willing to sell to me as an end consumer. I've never heard many good things about AAMCO shops in particular, but my local AAMCO really went out of their way to track down these parts for me.

Joel, up that number to 9 of us wanting to see the completion of this project.
My tranny is having issues now at over 230k miles on my 91 Dodge Cummins. Money is tight & I about died when I learned the cost at the local shop to rebuild it! I have turned a wrench or two in my time but this project is bigger than most I've tackeled. I really like the detail you have provided in your instructions! WOW! Is it possible that you might complete this any time soon? If not.. I will still attempt it but sure would like to have that crutch to lean on while I'm doing this. Thanks & keep up the good work.

There is a good chance of getting the rest of this done soon. It's certainly on my radar. The good news for you...if you make through these posts that are here right now, there's an awesome chance that you'll finish up quite easily!

Excellent write-up! I am embarking on a 47rh rebuild, hence how i came across your blog.
Pictures are worth a thousand words and about 100 line illustrations/manual diagrams.
Though I will have to see how much clearance I have, would you be willing to share your cad file for the machining?

Joel-it appears you have developed quite a fan club with your 42RH rebuild. I worked on Navy F-14's 20 plus years ago and would have loved to have had your type of visual manual back then..lol
Now I will be embarking on the journey of rebuilding my 42RH in my beloved 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4X4. It is my weekend desert vehicle used to tow my ATV's and shooting gear, ect.
135,000 miles on it with me being the second owner it has finaly said I need a rebuild with the slight whining noise it makes and the 10 seconds or so it takes to go into reverse or drive when it is cold.
Out of curiosity what is your normal line of work? You seem to be very mechanically inclined and detailed oriented and I am betting you would do well in your own transmission business.

I really have enjoyed reading it all the way through and I now feel convinced of taking this on as a DIY project as well. I too am looking forward for the "rest of the story". I'm glad I found your write up! My transmission in my 93 is still working fine at the moment, but I know a rebuild is in its future. I hate to ask, because i know you've already taken a huge amount of time to post what you have, but do you happen to have an itemized list of all the parts you used to rebuild your transmission? I'd like to have as much of the stuff I'd need on hand before I tore mine down. Also what did you end up having in your rebuild if you don't mind me asking? Thanks, Alex
